Prove Them Wrong

I once had a student that had a dream of being a professional NFL player. Others would constantly put him down for his dream and it was incredibly sad to see that people refused to believe in his dreams, regardless of the “chances” that he might achieve his dreams. He and I had long talks about how he could do it, but it wouldn’t be easy and it would take a lot of hard work and commitment. On another day, he decided (couldn’t tell you why) that I should be a rapper and together we decided my rapper name would be Sleepy Wolf and the Tired Pups. In my opinion, I’m the last person that should ever be a rapper, but it was a heartfelt moment to me. I used this moment to further encourage his dreams by writing a “rap” (I can’t rap, so it became more of just a poem that maybe one day I’ll make into an actual song) about proving all his naysayers wrong and achieving his dreams. Below is what I wrote, titled “Prove Them Wrong”:

I see that look in your eyes
That you’re trying to hide
But don’t fall for their lies
Hold on to your pride
Don’t let them crush your dream
Just keep pushing on through
Let your light gleam
Only you decide what’s true

It’s your choice who to be
And what your future holds

With a heart so kind
And your hope so strong
Someday soon you’ll find
You’ll be proving them all wrong

You know it’s where you belong
Don’t let them tell you “you can’t”
Just keep singing your song
Until it’s your name they chant
When life is bringing you down
Remember who you are
Smile more than you frown
Show them you’re a shining star.

It’s your choice who to be
And what your future holds

With a heart so kind
And your hope so strong
Someday soon you’ll find
You’ll be proving them all wrong

With a heart so kind
And your hope so strong
Someday soon you’ll find
You’ll be proving them all wrong

  1. Very nice. Staying positive is very important in life. People are willing to put us down quickly, but not lift us up.

    1. I agree! We should be lifting each other up more often! Life is tough enough itself, let alone when others are helping to bring us down rather than help us to rise.
